Super Visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for up to 2 years at a time.
Super Visa and Visitor Visa are both multiple-entry Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs). They can both
have a validity of up to 10 years. The difference is in the period of stay allowed per entry into Canada - 2
years for Super Visa as compared to 6 months for Visitor Visa.
Super Visa is an ideal option for the reunification of families where the host child or grandchild
does not qualify to sponsor parents or grandparents for permanent residency (PR) because of insufficient income.
The income requirement for a super visa is much lower than that for PR sponsorship.
Super Visa Vs Parental Sponsorship
For Super Visa, the host child or grandchild must meet the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) for one
year to prove their capability of providing financial support to you, the parents or grandparents,
during your visits to Canada. The host may add a co-signer to meet the LICO minimum. The proof of income
can be in the form of a Notice of Assessment (NOA) from CRA or one of the other options provided under
the program.
WHEREAS
For parental sponsorship, the sponsoring child or grandchild must meet the Minimum Necessary Income
(MNI)
for three years to prove their capability of providing financial support to you, the parents or
grandparents, once you and your dependent children become permanent residents. The host may add a
co-signer to meet the MNI minimum. MNI for sponsoring parents or grandparents is LICO +30%. The proof of
income can only be in the form of Notices of Assessment (NOA) from CRA.
Parents or grandparents visiting their children or grandchildren on Super Visa cannot apply for public
health insurance under the universal health-care system for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Hence, they must have private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company valid for a minimum
period of 1 year from the date of entry.
WHEREAS
Parents or grandparents sponsored as permanent residents by their children or grandchildren can apply for
public health insurance under Canada’s universal health-care system for Canadian citizens and permanent
residents.
ELIGIBILITY
An applicant is eligible for a super visa if they meet the requirements for temporary residence in
Canada as a visitor and provide the additional required documentation. Specifically, they must provide the
following:
proof of their relationship to the child or grandchild (who must be a Canadian citizen or permanent
resident), such as a copy of the child’s or grandchild’s birth certificate, or a copy of the child’s or
grandchild’s baptismal certificate, or another official document naming the applicant as the parent or
grandparent
proof of an immigration medical examination and of being admissible on health grounds
satisfactory evidence of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company valid for a minimum
period of 1 year from the date of entry that (all must apply)
covers the applicant for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation
provides a minimum of $100,000 coverage
is valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by the examining officer upon request
a letter of invitation written and signed by the host child or grandchild promising financial support for
the entire duration the applicant intends to stay in Canada
evidence of the child’s or grandchild’s means of providing financial support through meeting the Low Income
Cut-off (LICO) minimum (you may add a co-signer to meet the LICO minimum) in the form of 1 of the following
documents:
the most recent copy of the notice of assessment
the most recent copy of the child’s or grandchild’s T4 or T1
an original letter from the child’s or grandchild’s employer stating their job title, job
description, and salary
the child’s or grandchild’s employment insurance pay stubs, including a letter from an accountant
confirming the child’s or grandchild’s annual income, if they are self-employed, and proof of other
sources of income (pension statement, investments, etc.)
